How to wire a guitar?
I'm making a guitar. It will be made out of plywood and look somewhere between a gibson SG and a violin. The only problem is I don't know how to wire it. I was planning on putting in 3 humbuckers (neck, middle, bridge), an on/off switch for each, and each one having a volume and a tone control. I would like (but don't really need) a blend switch, like on some Rickenbackers, and a killswitch, like on some guitars by Gretsch. I'm looking for a sound with lots of treble in the bridge postition, lots of bass in the neck position, and something inbetween for the middle. I'm planning on using Dizmario Super distortion pickups in the bridge, middle, and, and neck. Any Suggestions
How to Wire an Electric Guitar
Wiring a guitar can be quite easy if you have a lot of patience, and a little electrical experience. This guide is for a two, single coil pickup guitar setup. It is very similar for humbucking pickups, you just need to connect the positive wire from one of the pickups to the ground of the other ( on the same pickup, you should know what I mean). After this, the pickup is basically a single coil now, and can be wired very similarly.
Step 1Write down every wire that is connected to another wire, making sure to add which color the wires are as it might be helpful later.
Step 2Find a wiring diagram for your pickups. These can usually be found at the manufacturers website.
Step 3The first wire will come from the input jack and will run to the positive side of your switch. (usually the middle) You can find out how to wire different switches from a google search.
Step 4From the other ends of the switch, assuming you are using a spdt, will go to the neck and bridge pickup. Obviously the "top" goes to the neck and the "bottom" to the bridge.
Step 5Once you have the switch hooked up to the positive sides of the pickups, either using the wiring that you recorded earlier and comparing the old pickup to the chart on the manufacturers website, or using the pamphlet that usually comes with a pickup, the other wires will go to the ground.
Step 6Connect all of the ground wires, there should be one from each pickup, and one from the input jack. There should be a small hole with a wire that connects to the bridge, which is the wire that you want the ground wires hooked to.
Step 7Make sure that none of the wires are touching, I usually use electrical tape so none of the wires short eachother out.
Step 8Your guitar should be ready to go, reassemble all the components and plug it in.
