why is the public address system output set to 70 volts?
In a public address system, the output is set to 70 volts no matter what the power rating is on the amplifier. Why is this done and why is it relevant.
public address systems need to be able to have multiple speakers and extend over a large distance as each situation needs. A higher line voltage means less current for the same power and therefore thinner wires required, and signal drop over distance is less problematic. 70volts was selected because higher voltages are considered potentially fatal to humans and 70 and below considered "safe". As more line transformers, each driving a speaker, are added to the line the amplifer works harder to maintain the line voltage.
